National MS Society - Challenge Walk: The Scrap Dog Team

How can you help?

Thank you.

Our 2008 goal of $25,000 was exceeded because of your generousity. Our 2009 Goal is $25,000 again. Are you able to help? Our 2009 goal will be updated in an attached comment as the year progresses.

Today, there is no cure for multiple sclerosis, and with diagnosis occurring most frequently between the ages of 20 and 50, many individuals face a lifetime filled with unpredictability.

This event is a challenge - and an opportunity - for everyone involved, participants and donors alike. With commitment to this cause, we can all be part of a historic undertaking. The funds raised from the MS Challenge Walk will not only support research to help create a world free of multiple sclerosis, but also provide programs which address the needs of hundreds of thousands of people living with MS right now. Because we choose to walk for those who sometimes can't. Because we choose to donate to the MS Challenge Walk, we are getting ever closer to the hour when no one will have to hear the words, "You have MS."

Watch this blog throughout the year for local fundraising events.

Silpada Jewelry Sales - Idea from the MS Web site - I have requested information.

Silpada Jewelry Sales
By having a Silpada Jewelry party, the host/hostess (event participant) would receive a donation of 30% of their total party sales.

For Example:

Percentage Donated: 30%
Total sold during jewelry party: $1000
Total donated towards your fundraising goal: $300

Silpada is unique in the direct sales industry; there is no formal presentation and no pressure, just beautiful handcrafted sterling silver jewelry.

Home show
Invite, family, friends, neighbors, co-workers. Kim Goodrich will display sample pieces of Silpada, circulate catalogs, help your customers make selections and take orders. Kim could even attend a fundraising event and display jewelry there.

Catalog party
Kim would send you catalogs/order forms to distribute to your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. You would provide them with a due back date, collect the completed order forms and return them to Kim for processing.

How it Works:
If you would like to host a party, please contact Kim Goodrich at (508) 406-0117 or goodrichkim@yahoo.com.

Papa Gino’s Pizzeria - Idea - From the MS web site -

There is a Papa Gino's in Middletown. Team members could hand out flyers to family and friends that work in the Middletown Industrial Park or the Navy base.

This program offers participants or teams the opportunity to solicit people to visit Papa Gino's during a pre-determined time period. When guests make their purchase, they present a Papa Gino's flyer for their group. In turn, Papa Gino's will donate 20% of the guest's entire purchase to the benefiting group. The donation is valid on dine-in and carry-out only, provided the person making the purchase presents a fundraiser flyer.

How it Works:

Pick a day: Sunday through Thursday
Pick a time: Lunch, 11:00 through 4:00 PM
Dinner, 4:00 PM through 9:00 PM
Times and dates are at the discretion of the general manager of each Papa Gino’s location.
20% of the order goes to the participant or team’s fundraising effort.
Visit your local Papa Gino’s and request to hold a fundraising party. They will coordinate a date with you and give you the appropriate paperwork, which you will be responsible for making copies of and distributing to your supporters being invited to Papa Gino’s. The supporters must present these fliers when eating at a Papa Gino’s during the allotted time in order for the walkers to receive credits.

Coldstone Creamery - Idea
From the MS Web site

There is a Coldstone Creamery in Newport. We could coordinate the kids day event with this especially if we could have the kids day at the Elks.

Coldstone Creamery wants to help you with your fundraising. Set a specific date and time with your local Coldstone Creamery and a percentage of the sales during that time goes to the participant’s fundraising efforts.

Meet with the manager of your Coldstone Creamery, complete the necessary forms and then discuss and decide on the specific details accordingly. The manager will give you a flier to distribute to your supporters. Promote the event and raise money for MS while eating delicious ice cream!

Shaw's Receipt Rewards Program - idea - From the MS Web site

One team member should volunteer to organize this program. We can send all receipts to them to organize, tally and submit. That team member would receive the funds from the program.

The Central New England chapter is a new member of the Shaw's Receipt Rewards Program. If you (or your friends and family) shop at any Shaw's and/or Star Markets, keep your receipts and and once you have at least $5,000 in receipts please submit them to us. Once we accumulate a significant amount in receipts will be send them to the Shaw's Receipt Rewards Program. In approximately 6-8 weeks, they will send us a check in the amount of 1% of the eligible receipts submitted. We will apply the appropriate amount of your receipts submitted to your fundraising account.

The key to your success with this program is in quantity. Get everyone you know who shops at a Shaw's or Star Market to send you their receipts. If you collect enough in receipts, you can make a nice addition to your fundraising efforts. This program is available on a continual basis so you have a lot of time to compile receipts. Good luck!

Once you have accumulated a sizable amount in Shaw's receipts (please wait until you have at least $5,000), send them to us. Please make sure that you include your name, your MS event name, and Shaw's Receipt Rewards Program on a note with the receipts. That way we can make sure it goes into your fundraising account.

Training with the Scrap Dogs - Tentative

I would like to organize these events.

We need to get local professionals in the health field (personal trainer, masseuse, yoga instructor, nutritionist, or anyone really) that will donate their time to give a brief seminar on proper eating habits while exercising, proper stretching, etc and then we will do a big walk. The public will pay a donation to walk with us and attend the seminar before.

We can coordinate this with the our YMCA training memberships. We could leave from the Y on some of the shorter walks.

Possible routes :

Y to Sachusett Point and Back
Y to Cliff Walk and Back
From Y around industrial park and back.

I would like to start these trainings in April. Having 2 in April, May, June, July and 4 in Aug and 1 in September.

Charge people $5.00 each to walk with us.

Saturday, October 11, 2009 - The Green Grocer in Portsmouth, RI will be having a Health and wellness Fair from 12 - 5 pm. Exhibiting at the fair will My Beach Designs, my daughter Ashley's business, she will be donating her proceeds to the Scrap Dogs. They have offered their location/parking lot for any type of event that we might like to have there. One idea will be to conduct a seminar there and start one of our "Training with the Scrap Dogs" walks from their location. So support their business and let them know you are part of the Scrap Dogs Team.
