National MS Society - Challenge Walk: The Scrap Dog Team

How can you help?

Thank you.

Our 2008 goal of $25,000 was exceeded because of your generousity. Our 2009 Goal is $25,000 again. Are you able to help? Our 2009 goal will be updated in an attached comment as the year progresses.

Today, there is no cure for multiple sclerosis, and with diagnosis occurring most frequently between the ages of 20 and 50, many individuals face a lifetime filled with unpredictability.

This event is a challenge - and an opportunity - for everyone involved, participants and donors alike. With commitment to this cause, we can all be part of a historic undertaking. The funds raised from the MS Challenge Walk will not only support research to help create a world free of multiple sclerosis, but also provide programs which address the needs of hundreds of thousands of people living with MS right now. Because we choose to walk for those who sometimes can't. Because we choose to donate to the MS Challenge Walk, we are getting ever closer to the hour when no one will have to hear the words, "You have MS."

Watch this blog throughout the year for local fundraising events.

The Scrap Dogs are out to take a bite out of MS

SAKONNET AREA — Six years ago, Linda Carr of Portsmouth completed her first MS Challenge, a three-day, 50-mile walk to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society New England Chapter. Since that first walk, she has recruited additional team members — some walkers and some volunteers who support her and the other walkers during the walk.

The Scrap Dogs (a name given to the team by a corporate sponsor some years ago) had eight walkers and 20 volunteers, most of them from the Portsmouth area, for the 2008 walk, and raised over $26,000. However, they have raised over $110,000 in the past six years. Bill Bohmbach and Linda Carr have been captains for the past four years. Jane Roggero is the new captain, and Erica Hasman is the new co-captain.

Most team members walk for family members and friends who have the disease. The group holds fund-raisers throughout the year and is conducting a “biggest loser” contest for team members, family and friends. Everyone paid an entry fee that will be put toward the fund-raising efforts, and the winner will receive a gift certificate from a local restaurant. Also taking place this month is a Yankee Candle sale.

Planned are “Training with the Scrap Dog” sessions, which will include a training walk of 8 to 12 miles with the Scrap Dogs and a brief seminar/demonstration conducted by a local health professional before or after the walk. The group is looking for volunteers who are knowledgeable about nutrition, personal training, yoga, massage therapy or holistic health to conduct these seminars. Attendees will be asked to make a donation to the Scrap Dogs.
